2011: the traditional beginning of year equipment review.

Personal trends for this year: moving away from the DSLRs except where required; I don't miss the weight or size. GRDIII has been 'rediscovered' and enjoyed lately. Got the opportunity to add a mint, barely (<100 shots) used Leica X1; figured no harm in trying it out, even less harm if I like it. If I don't, I can always trade it in for the Fuji X100 (which I have a feeling will be a killer good camera.) I want to shoot more video; the D3100 is there for that. Need to figure out an audio solution though, the built in mic is abysmally crap. Maybe I'll just use the sound recorder on the iphone. Speaking of iphones...the camera on the iphone 4 has surprised me - in a very good way. You'll probably also have noticed a number of iphone shots in the photostream - I do actually enjoy shooting with the thing, though I wish it had a physical shutter. It's just too difficult and unstable to peck at the screen - I feel like I'm going to drop the thing.

That X1 is growing on me. It's a beaaaaaaautiful camera. The first one I've had in a while that doesn't feel like an appliance, and which actually make me want to take pictures *of the camera*. The glass has that same clarity and transparency as the ZF distagons and Leica M ASPH lenses. (I'm told that it is indeed the same optical design as the 28/2.8 M Elmarit-ASPH.)

Wishing you all a good year a plenty of good shooting!
